Day 1 - 3: Lamu Island

A ninety minute flight from Nairobi will take you to Manda Island, adjacent to the ancient sleepy Swahili island of Lamu. On landing you will be met with warm island charm before boarding a speedboat and taking a twenty minute journey through a wide channel, fringed with mangroves, to Kipungani.

On arrival you will find an idyllic beach hideaway, perched over a sandy bay, under gently swaying coconut palms. Kipungani is private, secluded and extremely low key. The style is rustic and natural. In the lounge and bar area enormous brightly colored cushions are piled, inviting you to flop and order a cool drink. Sun bleached driftwood furniture and shells decorate the decked terrace, together with hanging "moon beds" with yet more soft, inviting cushions.

Accommodation consists of 15 beach cottages, or "grass villas", well spaced along the beach to ensure privacy. Walls and floors are made from local palm leaf matting, and the coconut thatch roof rises to a steep pitch to make the most of the cool trade winds. Verandahs face the ocean and behind the pretty bedrooms is a dressing area with basin, flush loo and fresh water shower. The water is unheated, which is certainly not a hardship when you return hot and salty from the beach. There are no doors and windows, but there are makuti blinds which let in the fresh air, and there is electricity and a ceiling fan for a cool breeze during the night.

A lot of activities are available to partake during you 3 night stay here: you can swim in the sparkling pool or you may choose to windsurf, sail or go deep sea fishing. A traditional Arab dhow can take you to Lamu, the oldest surviving town on the East African coast where there are no cars and only donkeys for transport. An Omani fort, now a museum, dominates this ancient stone town. Return to Kipungani for the evening. Dining here is a delight. Giant crab claws, great platters of seafood and fish, perfect fresh salads flown in daily, and dewily fresh tropical fruit are cooked and presented exquisitely. Kipungani allows you to feel the sand between your toes. Kipungani Explorer (B,L, D)
